Update on Asian navies
The Japanese Navy continues to increase its tonnage and capacity without actually increasing the number of already noteworthy warships. Although not yet up to the regional level, the Chinese Navy continues to increase in power, is preparing future support bases in Pakistan, The Maldives and Myanmar (Burma) and is showing an interest in aircraft carriers. The Indian Navy is maintaining its status as one of the world’s significant maritime forces, recently signing a contract for six Scorpène submarines, shortly bringing into service the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya (formerly the Russian Gorshkov) and laying down for domestic build a further aircraft carrier, Vikrant.
