In this article the OSCE Secretary General gives his general appreciation of the state of play regarding collaboration between NATO and the OSCE on the occasion of NATO’s 60th anniversary. Since their fields of competence are much closer and their relations date from the time of the Cold War, both organizations are well acquainted and used to working together.
Partnership and Cooperation between the OSCE and NATO
As it celebrates its 60th anniversary, NATO may take satisfaction from its achievements. The face of the Euro-Atlantic area has changed dramatically, dividing lines have been overcome and progress made towards forging common security based on shared values.
But hard work remains ahead also for the Alliance and all security organizations in Europe. Partnership and cooperation between the OSCE and NATO is an important contribution to a pursuit of greater security across the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian space. Tools and mandates are distinct, but the OSCE and NATO share a fundamental interest in the promotion of peace and stability. Interaction between the two has been regular and rich, and many programmes and activities are complementary.
Both organizations are twentieth-century creatures that have been adapting to a twenty-first century climate. Since the end of the Cold War, both have engaged in an almost permanent debate about how best to adapt to new realities, and both have evolved dramatically—in institutional terms, membership and scope of activities.
